OBITUARY
Violet J Mohr
Violet June Seger was born at home, north of Stuart, on June 21,1927, to John Leopold and Eva Alvina Campbell Seger, the 3rd youngest of a family of 11 children. She attended a rural school for her elementary education. Violet started high school at Stuart, later moving to live with her sister and husband Gordon and Alvina Smith and attended school in Couer’d Alene, Idaho. She then joined her sister Lenora in Wahoo for a short time before returning to Stuart Public for graduation in 1945.
On May 1945 Violet was married to Francis Alvin Mohr at the Atkinson Methodist Church. The marriage was performed by Rev W C Birmingham. In this time she taught Sunday school, worked at the hospital in Stuart, and also did various housekeeping and caretaking activities for most of her active life. Her husband Francis died on July 3,1955. Soon after his death, she moved her young family to Alma, Kan to be near her sister, Alvina. Later years saw her living with her children in Topeka, Kan, Fremont and Atkinson, and finally in Stuart where she raised her youngest son, Richard.
On April 13,1997 Violet suffered a massive stroke. After surgery at Kearney she spent the next three years at the Madonna Center in Lincoln. On May 4,2000 she moved to the Atkinson Good Samaritan Center where she departed this life on Friday Oct 28,2005.
Although Violet was a very private person she had a great sense of humanity and compassion for the downtrodden. She had a love of nature and delighted in flowers and gardening, doctoring small injured animals back to health, and caring for young children. She instilled in her children a strong work ethic, intergrity and honesty, despite a life of great adversity and hardship and many health problems.
Violet is survived by four sons, and one dau. Willis and Patty Mohr of Citrus Heights, Cal; Clayton of Rochester, NY; Francie and Roy Hipke of Stuart; Tom of Eugene, Oreg; Richard of Stuart. Three sisters, Alvina Smith of Riverton, Wyo; Lenora and Pat Dobry of Kearney; Shirley and John Peter of Atkinson; three sisters-in-law Nellie Seger of Fairbury,Nebr; Margaret Seger of Phoenix,Ariz; Alice Dunn of Omaha; six grandchildren, Michael Mohr, Brendon and Danielle Mohr, Kevin Mohr, Virginia Gates, Katherine and Jason Byrd, Kimberly and Dustin Lofquist. William “Willlie’ James Seger was born on Aug 14,1923, the 6th child of John and Eva Campbell Seger in Stuart, Nebr. He was 1 of 11 children; 4 boys and 6 girls and one still born child.
Willie attended grade school north of Stuart and graduated from Stuart High School in 1940. While attending high school he was active in all sports; football, basketball, boxing and track.
After graduating from high school, he galloped horses for Alan Foster and Frank Ulrich who owned the local tavern in Stuart.
In 1941, Willie went to Ak Sar Ben in Omaha with Frank Ulrich. While there, he met a jockey named Fritz Becker who taught him how to ride. He rode his first race in Lincoln, Nebr in 1941. That fall, he went to Phoenix, Ariz and won his 1st race at the Phoenix Fairgrounds. In 1942 he spent the summer riding in Nebr and Mont.
On Sept 16,1942 Willie married Margaret Kirkman from Wood Lake, Nebr. They had 3 children; Richard James, Susanne Luane, and Sandra Alyce.
Richard James lives in Tonto Basin, Ariz.
Susanne is deceased.
Sandra married Rasch and lives in Phoenix, Ariz.
Willie and Margaret have one granddaughter, Sunny Jane Seger of Phoenix, and two step grandchildren; Sean and Kim of Tonto Basin, Ariz.
Willie has ridden in most of the states west of the Miss River. Wash, Oreg, Cal, Ariz, NM, Mont, Okla, Kan, Ky, Ill, Ind, Nebr. He had a successful career as a jockey.
In 1960 after 20 years of riding as a jockey, Willie became a jockey’s valet. In 1979 because of health reasons, he was forced to retire but still travels the racing circuit with his wife. Margaret was employed by Ak Sar Ben in Omaha for 18 years. She is presently employed in the Pari Mutuel Dept in Phoenix, a position she has held for the past 23 years.
Although their home is in Phoenix, Ariz, and they have lived there for 41 years, Willie and Margaret still claim Nebr as their home state and look forward to coming back every summer.
The following articles printed in the Stuart Advocate in Sept 1942 and Nov 1943 acclaim Willie Seger’s success as a jockey.
WILLIAM SEGER IS LEADING JOCKEY AT STATE FAIR MEET
At the close of 2 days of racing in the state fair meet at Lincoln, William Seger, apprentice jockey, was leading all the riders with 15 points. In two days he had ridden 12 mounts and finished in the money in 7 of the races. He took 2 firsts, 4 seconds, and 1 third. Two other jockeys won in 3 races, but they had ridden more mounts and had not finished in the money as frequently.
The Stuart jockey, son of Mr and Mrs John Seger, is rapidly coming to the top in his profession. At the race meets in Madison, Albion and Columbus and in 2 weeks on a Mont track, he recently brought home 15 winners and an unreported number of place and show horses. In one of the good races in Mont, Seger rode Glad Quibbler, owned by
Frank Ulrich of Stuart, and placed second in a close race.
SEGER RIDES FIVE TURF WINNERS IN PHOENIX MEETING
The following is taken from a report in a Phoenix, Ariz newspaper.
Jockey Willie Seger, who got his start here a season ago, booted home five winners in a nine race program at Phoenix Sportsman’s Park yesterday, including Counsellor Fat, owned by Geo Hazelton of Glendale, in the featured Hotel Adams Purse.
Outstanding rider of the current holiday and weekend racing being presented here by the Phoenix Breeders Inc, since he brought in four winners in seven races on opening day, Seger’s performance yesterday boosted his victories to 19 in 5 days of racing. He has been aboard winners in almost half of the 40 races presented in the current meet at the North 7th Avenue Track.
SEGER BOOTS MOUNT TO VICTORY OVER FAVORITE
Chief Stanley’s highly regarded Midland finished fourth as Seger guided Counsellor Fat to victory before a large crowd in yesterday’s 6 ½ furlong feature. His time was 1:21 2-5 and his mount paid his backers $10.60, $4.80 and $3.80.

Explains Accident
Fatal to Ivan W. Seger
The following letter from Cpl. Elmer – Betts tells Mrs. Ivan W. Seger how her husband, Sgt. Seger was instantly killed in Germany April 29 when he was thrown from a truck which was driven by Cpl Betts:
Ulm, Germany,
May 30, 1945
Dear Mrs. Seger;
I am at a loss for words in this letter for I know how much grief and misery you have been through from the death of your husband. I would have written to you sooner, but Army regulations would not permit.
Ivan was a very good friend of mine an d I felt I should write and let you know how it happened, not only because he was a good friend, but because I was with him at the time. You see, we were evacuating wrecked trucks to a collection point. On our way back Ivan stated driving. Because he had been driving most of the day and night before, I took the wheel to relieve him. We were going around a curve, with a truck coming toward us. This truck was crowding our side of the road. As I swung our truck toward our side of the road the front wheel hit some object, causing the truck to jump the curb and glance off the side of a house very close to the road. I had all I could do to handle the truck. I never saw Ivan leave the cab, but somehow he was tossed out, landing on a paved courtyard. He was killed instantly by a fractured back.
Believe me, I know how this grieves you. I know my grief is not nearly as deep or as dear as yours, but he was a very good friend to me. I thought you would like to know how it happened. I felt it was not only my duty to you, but to Ivan, that I should write to you. Words seem so inadequate in a situation like this. You have my very deepest sympathy.
Respectfully yours,
Elmer Betts.
Mrs. Ivan W. Seger and her daughter, Shirley Kay, arrived in Grand Island yesterday from her home in Portland, Ore., and were met by Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Seger, Ivan’s parents. They will visit for a time in the Seger home south of Atkinson.

Edward Frank Seger - Obituary

Atkinson Graphic April 6 1951
Edward F. Seger Killed Instantly Saturday Night By Falling Steel Dump Box
Edward Seger, 34, mechanic employed by the Keating Implement company of Atkinson was instantly killed Saturday night in the Keating repair shop when the steel box of a dump truck fell on him. Mr Seger was alone in the shop at the time of the accident. The truck, on which he had been doing some repaid work was his own vehicle.
Willis Peterson, local rancher, had been in the shop with Mr. Seger, working on a carburetor which he had brought in for repair. Peterson went out for a short time and when he returned about 10 o’clock, discovered Seger pinned between the truck frame and dumb box. Seger was crushed across the head and shoulders, caught as if by the snapping jaw of a monster when the raised box let go and fell. The examining doctor said that he undoubtedly been killed instantly.
Mr Seger had been employed by the Keating firm since 19??. It is presumed that he had been readying his truck for ----- gravel hauling and had driven it into the shop to work on it spare time. It had been his custom to return to the Keating store on Saturday nights on many occasions to help take care of customers needs.
He had raised the steel dump box to the dumping position and was evidently working on the hydraulic elevating mechanism under the box when the box fell.
A length of 2x4 found laying alongside the truck indicated that he had intended to prop the dump box up while working. It is not known whether he had used this safety measure and it had slipped, or whether he had neglected to insert the timber as a prop.
Shortly before the accident, Mr. Peterson came into the shop with the carburetor that needed repair. He and Seger checked it over, determined that several screws were missing. Peterson left to see if he could purchased the needed screws uptown, leaving Seger alone in the back shop.
He returned shortly, pounded on the back door of the shop, receiving no answer. Finally, he went around through the front way, entered the shop and found Seger pinned under the dump box.
Only member of the Keating firm in the front shop at the time of the accident was P. J. Keating, senior member. Mr. Keating knew nothing of the accident until Peterson discovered it.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian church for Edward Frank Seger, who died March 31 at age of 34 years. Rev. Orin Graff conducted the service.
Music was provided by Mrs. Glen McClung and Miss Bonnie Humphrey with Miss --- McClung accompaning.
