The Mick Family from "Before Today"

From: Before Today, A History of Holt County Nebraska
By Nellie Snyder Yost
Published by Miles Publishing Co, O'Neil Nebraska 1976

Peter Mick, came to Wisconsin from Germany in the 1860’s, married there in 1870 and had two sons, Peter and Mathew. The mother died at Mathew’s birth and the father remarried. Peter Weber a settler from southeast of Atkinson, went to Wisconsin to visit relatives at Mineral Point, Wisconsin, where there he met and married Susan Mick, one of Peter Mick’s 6 children by his second marriage. They returned to Holt County to live on Weber’s place. Soon after ward, Mathew Mick decided to move to Atkinson and join his sister. He came by train, found work in the Valley and became friends of the Seger family.

In Nov 1901 he married Caroline Seger at St Joseph’s Church. Later he homesteaded one of the few remaining quarters of unclaimed land, some 6 miles southwest of Atkinson. About a year after Mathew’s marriage a neighboring homesteader, Bernard Bonenberger, went to Wisconsin, married Caroline’s sister, Mary Mick and brought her back to the valley.

Mathew and Caroline were the parents of 4 children, all of whom are married and living in or around Atkinson. Caroline died in 1945, Mathew stayed on at the home place until his grandson came home from the Army in 1947 and bought the homestead. Mathew died 2 years later.

William Paul Seger Obituary

Atkinson Graphic June 2, 1958
WM SEGER, 66, KILLED BY SHOTGUN BLAST
William P (Bill) Seger, 66, a retired farmer who had lived in the Atkinson community his entire life, was killed instantly early Monday morning, June 2, by a shotgun blast which struck him in the heart.

The body was found in the garage at the Seger home in the northeast part of Atkinson. Sheriff Leo S Tomjack said the fatal wound was self inflicted with a short barreled ?gauge shotgun which belonged to Mr Seger. No inquest was held. Time of death was set approximately 3 am.

Mr Seger had been in ill health for some time. His wife, the former, Eva Kelly of Oakdale, had been taking care of him in their home. She arose and prepared breakfast Monday and discovered that something was wrong when she went to her husband’s room to call him and found him gone.

Rosary was recited at the Seger Funeral Home Tuesday, evening, and the funeral services were conducted at 10 o’clock, Wednesday morning at St Joseph Catholic Church, the Rev Robert Morocco officiating.

Pallbearers were James Kubart, Earl Elsbury, Arthur Humpal,Eli McConnell, Melvin and Marvin Meals. Committal in St Joseph’s Cemetery was delayed until Thursday morning to await the arrival of Mr Seger’s only grandchild, Miss Shirley Seger and her mother, Mrs Robert Norton of Aberdeen, Wash.

William Paul Seger was a son of J Leopold and Elizabeth Allen Seger. He was born June 21,1891 on the farm four miles south of Atkinson and spent most of his life on that same farm. His father was the oldest brother of the late Paul, Donat, John and Max Seger and Mrs John (Jennie) Bauman. The Segers were pioneer settlers who came to this community from Chicago in 1880.

William was married to Miss Eva Kelly of Oakdale on Feb 28,1911 at Neligh. Their only son, Ivan, was killed in a vehicle accident in 1945 while serving in the Army in the European Theater of operations during WWII.

Mr and Mrs Seger lived on the Seger home place south of Atkinson until about ten years ago, when they sold the farm and moved to town. They later purchased the late Nick Kline place seven miles south of Atkinson and lived there until four years ago when they retired and moved back to Atkinson.

Mr Seger, a robust outdoorsman, loved to hunt and fish, and was one of the community’s best known sportsmen.

He is survived by his wife, Eva; one granddaughter, Miss Shirley Seger of Aberdeen, Wash.Brothers, Frank Edward of Atkinson and John of Stuart; sisters, Mrs Minnie Eckhoff of Atkinson, and Mrs Charles (Margaret) Reber of Lewisburg, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ivan; one infant grandchild; one brother, Gustave and two sisters, Mrs Lee (Mary) Steskal and Mrs Matt (Carrie) Mick.

Eva Kelly Seger Injured

Atkinson Graphic
MRS SEGER INJURED
Mrs William Seger suffered a fractured back early Tuesday when she slipped and fell in her home. Her back struck the slight rise of a threshold in an interior doorway, and one of her vertebrae was chipped.

The injury apparently did not damage the spinal cord and there was no indication of paralysis. She is in the Atkinson Memorial Hospital and was unable to attend the funeral of her husband whose tragic death occurred early Monday.

Mrs Seger’s mother, Mrs Kelly of Oakdale and a sister, had come to be with her Monday and were in the home when Mrs Seger was injured.

John Leopold Seger met his wife, Eva Alvina Campbell (born Oct 1,1898 of Oakdale, Dau of Albert Campbell and Elizabeth Moore ) in Stuart. Eva was living with her sister, May Campbell McGrew, and John was working for the same. On March 30,1914 John picked up Eva during his lunch hour, traveled to Bassett, Nebraska and was married. He returned to work that same afternoon.

John and Eva had 11 children (one being stillborn), Robert (1916), Donald (1917), Rose (1919), Louise (1920), Alvina (1922) William (1923), Lenora (1926), Violet (1927), Betty Lou (1928 living for 3 months and died from Pneumonia), and Shirley (1934). They were all born in the Stuart area.

The John “Jack” Seger family lived and grew up north of Stuart. This third American generation of Segers continued to work hard on the Nebraska prairie lands. But the stockmarket crash and the bank foreclosings took its toll on the family and the Great Depression necessarily altered their lives . But still they continued.

They believed in education and sacrificed in order that their children might attend a Stuart rural school Dist 172. In 1933, when their dau, Rose, was in the 8th grade, she became Holt County’s spelling champion. This entitled her to be a contestant in the World Herald spelling contest in Omaha and also at the Lincoln State Fair in Sept.
Eva passed away on Aug 27,1983 and is buried in the Stuart Cemetery. John is presently a resident of the Senior Citizens Home in O’Neill, Nebraska.

Their children presently live throughout Nebraska.

▪ Rose Seger married James Raymond “Ray” Coday of Atkinson on Nov 10,1937 at the St Boniface Catholic Church in Stuart with Father John P Hilt officiating. They lived in Atkinson and Stuart area except for three years during WWII. They moved to Fremont, Nebraska in 1950 and presently live there.

When John Seger’s granddaughter, Sister Regina Coday, asked if he had any idea that the few buildings on the prairie would ever become towns, he answered, “I had no idea that there was going to be a town of Atkinson and Stuart. It just came on gradual. There was hardly anything there when I was a kid.” John was 90 years old in September 1983.

Written by Sister Regina Coday, dau of James and Rose Coday.
